Join us for the opening reception of the exhibit “Visions Behind the Veil: Soviet Portraiture and Cultural Resilience” from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.
“Visions Behind the Veil: Soviet Portraiture and Cultural Resilience” invites viewers on a compelling journey into Soviet portraiture, where the veils of political ideology often obscured deeper layers of human experience. The exhibition reveals the resilience of Soviet artists in navigating the constraints of state censorship while striving to capture the essence of their subjects. From stoic workers and party officials to artists, performers, and poets, each portrait becomes a window into the complexities of life under the Soviet regime. The exhibition celebrates artistic achievements through intimate portrayals while highlighting the enduring human spirit beyond political confines.
The exhibit “Visions Behind the Veil: Soviet Portraiture and Cultural Resilience” is on display Friday, Dec. 6 through Saturday, Jan. 19. is The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Extended hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. All art exhibits are free and open to the public.
